What the bribe bought

The payment bought a favour in the award of the public contract to build the Herstal waste incinerator (Uvelia) for the inter-municipal waste body Intradel. No contract value is documented.

What happened

A former mayor of Seraing took 700.000 euros in cash from the director of a French incineration company, according to the court. The court described the sum as the price of the corruption in the award of the Herstal incinerator contract. The Liège Court of Appeal convicted him on 11 March 2022: 12 months suspended and confiscation of 700.000 euros. The Court of Cassation rejected his appeal on the criminal part on 2 November 2022. On 10 November 2023 a civil ruling favoured Intradel, including interest on 700 000 euros since 2015.
