What happened

In 1999 the town of Chomutov sold its shares in two regional energy and gas companies to a German energy company. The town's former mayor was convicted of accepting a bribe of approximately 43 million crowns. The buyer paid a brokering fee of 2.27 million marks to an intermediary, and the buyer itself was not convicted. The regional court in Ústí nad Labem sentenced the former mayor to four years in prison and upheld a fine of 5,000,000 CZK. The judgment is final.
